Royal Docks: Learning and Activity Centre

Walking for Wellbeing ,   Newham ,   Royal Docks: Learning and Activity Centre ,     2023 ,   £ 3794

The Royal Docks Learning & Activity Centre (RD:LAC) is a well-established organisation in the local area of Woolwich. It is a multi-purpose organisation aiming to improve wellbeing, reduce loneliness and isolation, and improve overall mental health of the local community. The RD:LAC promotes a variety of services and activities for the local community such as providing a food bank, arts classes and access to therapy, but have recently started a new walking group open to all.

The walking group is intended for all members of the community in the Royal Docks and North Woolwich area, but many come from further areas to take part. The walks aim to connect people in North Woolwich and the Royal Docks to tackle social isolation and improve mental and physical health. RD:LAC encourages the community and participants that are traditionally under-represented in walking to participate and explore their local area. For example where people have barriers to walking such as income, additional needs connected or to support their mental health.

A key part of the walking group is to reduce stress and stress related illnesses by building a supportive, active, connected and engaging community. Encouraging that participants walk as a means of transport, exercise and leisure. To build a supporting and social atmosphere walk leaders will often encourage conversations and check in with the community making sure that they are comfortable and to help them engage with the rest of the group. Walking routes will be suitable for all age groups and physical ability, and RD:LAC ensure safety by providing volunteers and the walk participants are very supportive of each other.

It is expected that the walking group will attract around 50 participants in year one, 20 more in year two and a further 15 in year three. RD:LAC is aiming to reach targeted groups to encourage participation by advertising in local shops, businesses, organisations and local schools, as well as using flyers and newspaper advertisements.
